REPORT No. 1

It is a pleasure to send a report on searches made to date on the ancestry of Henry Wagstaff.

According to the patron's explicit request I have checked and authenticated any information shown on the pedigree as a result of previous research, and am happy to say that I have been able to clarify and in fact prove one of the controversial points on the pedigree. The needed birth record of Joseph Wagstaff has been found in the registers of the Baptist Chapel 1of Blunham, Bedfordshire.

I hope that the patron will not think that the present results are meagre in relation to the cost of this report, but I would like to point out that much of the time was spent carefully proving, point by point, the information already on the pedigree so that it was not possible to spend much time getting new data. It would have been foolish to have rushed ahead without first establishing these points, and the file is now clear to extend the various lines of the pedigree when we continue research.

Wagstaff line.

Nos. 4 & 5 on the pedigree appear thus in the 1854 census of Upper Caldecote, Beds
Joseph Wagstaff 45 Ag. Labr. Born in Bedfordshire
Edith Wagstaff 50 Born in Bedfordshire

You will recall that in the 1841 census the enumerator recorded the age of persons to within the nearest 5 years. You will notice that this couple did not have any of their children living at home with them. Their son John was recorded at Brookend, Northill, as follows:
John Wagstaff 25 Garderner's Labourer Born in Bedfordshire
Jane Wagstaff 20 Born in Bedfordshire
George Wagstaff 01 Born in Bedfordshire

Hannah Wagstaff had married before the 1841 census and is recorded with her husband at Lower Caldecote as follows:

William Symonds 25 Gardener Born in Bedfordshire
Hannah Symonds 20 Born in Bedfordshire

The Old Meeting Baptist Church, High Street, Blunham. The other Baptist Church is “Strict Baptist” in Park Lane, Blunham,

In the 1851 census which gives more complete details we find your ancestor William Wagstaff with his wife and eldest daughter living at Upper Caldecote as follows:
William Wagstaff Head Md. 26 Gardener & Beerhouse Keeper Born Northill, Beds
Betsy Wagstaff Wife Md. 22 Born Biggleswade, Beds
Sarah Elizabeth Wagstaff Dtr 09 mths Born Sandy, Beds.

And next door William's parents:
Joseph Wagstaff Head Md. 56 Gardener's Labr. Born Northill, Beds.
Edith Wagstaff Wife Md. 60 Born Northill, Beds.

These census returns show quite clearly that Joseph Wagstaff was born about 1795 at Northill, but Northill Parish Registers show no entry of his christening. A search of six parishes adjoining Northill also failed to show the christening of Joseph Wagstaff so I decided to search the Non-conformist Church records of Cardington, Blunham, and Biggleswade, the nearest non-conformist chapels. At Blunham Baptist Church the following appears:

Joseph Wagstaff son of John & Elizabeth Wagstaff (maiden name Larkins) of Brookend, Northill. Born 23rd April 1797; registered 12th September 1797.

This undoubtedly refers to the ancestor, and proves the name of John Wagstaff and Elizabeth Larkins. The birthdate 1797 is two years out from the age given in the census returns, but as Edith Rowney was a few years older than her husband I think he must have said that he was a bit older than he was in order to lessen this fact.

The following family group record can now be recorded:

Ray M. Wagstaff 3rd gt. gdson.

The following represents an extension of another generation on the Larkins line:-

George Larkins (blacksmith)
born about 1729 Biggleswade, Beds.
bur. 08 May 1800 Biggleswade, Beds.
md. 15 Apr, 1754 Biggleswade, Beds.
Wife: Elizabeth Daniel.
born about 1733 Biggleswade, Beds.
bur 19 Jan. 1799 Biggleswade, Beds.
Children: all born at Biggleswade, except nos. 8 & 9, who were christened at Northill.
1. George chr. 11 May 1755
2. John (twin) chr. 25 Sep 1757* md. 02 July 1780 Mary Carter
3. George chr, 25 Sep 1757* md. 24 Oct 1797 Elizabeth Limbury
4. Elizabeth chr. 25 Sep. 1757* md. 16 June 1784 John Wagstaff
5. William chr. 25 Sep. 1757*
6. Ishmael (twin) born about 1759 bur, 06 Mar 1760
7. William born about 1759 bur. 06 Mar 1760
8. William chr. 05 Apr 1761 md. 16 Apr 1792 Mrs. Elizabeth Barker
9. Ishmael chr. 05 Feb. 1763 bur. 09 Feb. 1763
10. Edmund chr. 24 Apr 1764 bur. 01 Nov. 1764
11. Edmund chr. 01 Sep. 1766
12. James chr, 21 Oct. 1768
13. Anne chr. 31 Mar. 1772 md. 24 Dec. 1792 Charles Pryor
14. Samuel chr. 17 Feb. 1774 bur. 20 Feb. 1776

The entry of children 2,3, 4 & 5 is somewhat puzzling. There is no burial of the child George, born 1755, and the William buried in 1780 is recorded as a twin with Ishmael buried on same date; if there was a William in 1757 it is odd that he was not buried either and I wonder if the twins of 1757 were not just John and Elizabeth but the entry shows four children.

George Larkins, junior (Blacksmith)
chr. 25 Sep. 1757 Biggleswade, Beds.
son of George Larkins & Elizabeth Daniel.

Children born at Biggleswade, Beds.
1. Ann chr. 18 Mar. 1782
2. Elizabeth chr. 18 Jan. 1784
3. Mary chr. 24 Aug. 1785

It should now be possible to extend the Wagstaff, Larkins and Daniel lines. At the present time searches were made back only to 1750.

The James Wagstaff christened 1773 and the William Wagstaff christened 1775 shown on your family group of John Wagstaff and Elizabeth Larkins do not belong to that couple. These two boys were sons of John Wagstaff who married Elizabeth Allnon at Biggleswade, 13 February 1773, and they were christened at Biggleswade too. The child James was buried 27 June 1780 and the father John Wagstaff was buried 05 December 1775. The mother Elizabeth was re-married at Biggleswade, subsequently on 02 March 1778 to John Tyrie. It is clear that this is a completely different and separate family.

A Newman Wagstaff was married at Northill in 1778 and it seems that he may be a brother of your John Wagstaff who married Elizabeth Larkins in 1784, as your John named a son Newman. I notice too that a John Wagstaff married a Mary Abbiss at Northill in 1734 and this couple may prove to be ancestral. This Mary was buried at Northill in 1770 as Mary, widow of John Wagstaff, gardener. Searches prior to 1750 may clarify these points. Searches at Biggleswade prior to 1750 may show further connections of the Larkins and Daniel lineages.

Rowney Line.

Edith (Rowney) Wagstaff was aged 60 in the 1851 census and this checks with her christening as you have it and as verified by me, 10 October 1790 at Northill, daughter of James Rowney and Elizabeth Cooper. The family group of James Rowney and Elizabeth Cooper is correct just as you have it with 11 children, all the dates have been verified. The third child Mary Rowney was indeed buried, 02 May 1784, and her parents named another daughter Mary, so she cannot be the Mary who married William Matthews in 1805. The marriage to William Matthews did not take place at Sandy or Northill and clearly refers to some other woman named Mary Rowney so that correction should be made.

The family group of James Rowney, senior and wives Elizabeth ............. and 2/Ann Peppercorn have been verified and are correct as you have them with the following amendments -

Child 2. of James & Elizabeth Rowney, Ann was buried 08 July 1752. Ann Peppercorn was buried at Northill, 19 January 1780. Jane Rowney married William Gregory, 07 June 1789; Sarah Rowney was christened 28 March 1767 and not 1769.

The name Cooper is very common in this region. The family group of Thomas Cooper and Elizabeth Tilcock is correct as you have it, with the following additions:-

Thomas Cooper was buried 17 July 1811 aged 84. Elizabeth Tilcock was buried 24 October 1787. The 10th child Edith, was married 09 July 1789 to William Edmonds. Your ancestress Elizabeth Cooper had a child born prior to her marriage to your ancestor James Rowney, no father named in the registers. The child was Thomas Cooper christened 11 Sept. 1774 at Sandy and buried 27 October 1774. The 6th child was buried 18 March 1766.

The following are collateral family groups:-

Thomas Cooper
chr. 17 Jan. 1757 Sandy
Son of Thomas Cooper & Elizabeth Tilcock
md. 27 Nov. 1782 Sandy
Wife: Elizabeth Surquet
born about 1761 Sandy
Children born at Sandy
1. John chr. 06 June 1763 buried 04 Dec. 1791
2. Sarah chr. 04 Feb. 1785
3. William chr. 28 Sept. 1787
4. Maria chr. 08 Nov. 1793

William Cooper
chr. 04 Apr. 1763 Sandy, Beds.
Son of Thomas Cooper & Elizabeth Tilcock.
md. 09 Apr. 1787 Sandy
Wife: Elizabeth Sutton
born about 1766 Sandy
Children: born at Sandy
1. Samuel chr. 30 Oct. 1787
2. Edith chr. 27 July 1789 md. 13 June 1811 Henry Jeeves.
3. Mary chr. 25 July 1791
4. Ann chr. 07 Feb. 1793
5. James chr. 13 Jan. 1795
6. Hannah chr. 25 May 1797
7. Elizabeth chr. 12 Mar. 1799
8. Hannah chr. 11 July 1799
9. Thomas chr. 13 Oct, 1801
10. William chr. 25 July 1803
11. James chr. 29 July 1805
12. Thomas chr. 01 June 1809

No attempt was made at the present time to extend further the Tilcock, Cooper and Spring lines as you have them as searches were made back to 1750 only.

PETERSEN REPORTS

Patron: Mary L. Petersen.

Report No. 2.

It is a pleasure to send a second report of extensive searches in Bedfordshire parishes on the ancestry of Henry Wagstaff. Research has continued from the points where we left off in Report I.

Wagstaff Line.

The parishes of Sutton, Sandy, Biggleswade, Old Warden, Cople, Willington, Northill, Southill, Blunham with Mogerhanger and Cardington have been searched, christenings, marriages and burials 1600-1750 on this line. No christening of a John Wagstaff of a suitable date for the one married 1784 at Northill has been found. The name Wagstaff was fairly common in the area. We note with interest that a John Wagstaff was christened at Northill, 01 December 1737, son of John and Mary. The parents were John Wagstaff and Mary Abbess, who had married at Northill, 1734, this Mary was buried there as a widow of John Wagstaff, gardener, in 1770.

It seems possible that this John, christened 1737, may be ancestral, but there appears to be a generation missing and we will now search Potton parish, which in any case has to be searched on the Boness line, in the hopes of finding your John Wagstaff there. The John Wagstaff who married Mary Abbess was christened 29 January 1698, one of the 8 children of William Wagstaff and Dorothy Stevens, who married at Sutton, 1693. His sister Dorothy, also christened at Sutton, was married at Northill. It would be excellent if we can connect up to this family. A point of interest is also that William Wagstaff, christened 1693, married Frances ............., and this Frances married,as her second husband Jonathan Rowney; this may indicate a previous connection between the Wagstaff and Rowney families. A search of the Wagstaff wills is also to be made and may clarify these points.

Larkin or Larkins Line.

Searches have been made 1600 – 1750 in the Larkins line in all the parishes listed above as searched for Wagstaff. The surname Larkins is also uncommon in the area. It appears mainly at Cardington where the family is represented for several generations between 1612 and 1690, but they also seem to have left after the marriages of the sons of the last generation in 1715 and 1727. This is, of course, just the period in which we are looking for the christening of your George Larkins, so again we must extend the search to other parishes.

Daniel Line.

Elizabeth Daniel (no. 19 on the pedigree of Henry Wagstaff), was married at Biggleswade 1754 (see Report 1, page ). After searches in 10 parishes, we are happy to report that we have found her christening at Sutton, and we give below the family group showing this extension:-

John Daniel
Born about 1703 Sutton, Beds.
md. 07 Oct. 1728 Sutton.
Wife Ann Abraham
born about 1707 of Sutton, Beds.
bur. 02 Sep. 1737 Sutton.
Children born at Sutton:
1. Ann
2. Elizabeth chr. 26 Mar. 1732 bur. 19 Jan. 1799. md. 15 Apr. 1754 George Larkins.

The christening of John Daniel does not appear in any of the 10 parishes searched and the search will now be extended over a wider field; the name is very rare thereabouts, and only 5 entries have been found in the whole search to date. No searches have yet been made on the Abraham line. This will now be done.

Rowney Line.

The marriage of James Rowney (no 20 on Henry Wagstaff pedigree) to Elizabeth .........,did not occur in any of the 10 parishes searched. Neither was the christening of James Rowney, senior, found. At Biggleswade, however, we note with interest that Patrick Rowney and wife Ann had children, William christened 1731, Thomas christened 1733. John christened 1739 and Sarah buried 1746. As your James Rowney (no. 20)< named a son Patrick, and the name Patrick is rather uncommon here, it seems likely that your James was an older son of Patrick and Ann, born before they moved to Biggleswade in 1731> Again in this case, Potton must be searched, and other parishes in the area.

Cooper Line.

The family group of Thomas Cooper & Elizabeth Spring submitted by you has been checked; we found two additional burial dates:-

Child no. 7. Mary. Bur. 01 Sep. 1747

Child no. 9 Hannah bur. 23 Jan. 1738

There also seems to be another child not listed on your family group; for we notice the burial of Joseph, son of Thomas Cooper on 08 March 111734. No christening was found for this child.

Thomas Cooper (no. 44) was not christened at Sandy, where he married. Although the name Cooper is very common with that parish. Your ancestress Elizabeth Spring was married at Sandy in 1720, and we find her christened at Sandy, 24 July 1698: Elizabeth, daughter of John and Elizabeth Spring; however at that time there was a John Spring with wife Mary having children at Sandy. It was not uncommon for such errors to occur, and on other occasions we have found that a clerk mistakenly copied the name of the child again as the name of the mother, as in this case. In order to clarify the point, we will have the Bishops' Transcripts checked, and also the wills. In the meantime, it seems evident that the Spring ancestry is as follows:-

John Spring
born about 1670
bur. 02 Nov. 1714 Sandy, Beds.
md. 11 Nov. 1695 Sandy.
Wife: Mary Bailey.
born about 1674 Sandy
bur. 14 Nov. 1710 Sandy
Children christened at Sandy
1. John chr. 18 Nov. 1696 md. Ann ................
2. Elizabeth chr. 24 July 1698 md. 03 May 1720 Thomas Cooper
3. Mary. chr. 20 June 1703 bur. 27 Mar. 1704
4. William chr 28 Jan. 1706 bur. 07 Jan. 1708

Tingey Line.

James Tingey and his wife Elizabeth Boniss were found in the 1841 census living at Biggleswade Turnpike, Lower Caldecote, parish of Northill. The census return is as follows:

James Tingey 40 Gardener. born Bedfordshire.
Elizabeth 40 born Bedfordshire
James 14 born Bedfordshire
Betsy 11 born Bedfordshire
Sally 09 born Bedfordshire
Mary 06 born Bedfordshire

You will see that this gives an additional child, Mary, born 1835, missing from your family group, and also gives a birthdate for Sally or Sarah. The eldest son Henry was already married and appears as follows at Upper Caldecote in 1841:-

Henry Tingey 20 Gardener. born Bedfordshire.
Anne 20 born Bedfordshire.

By 1851 Elizabeth Boniss Tingey had died and the return for James is as follows:-

Lower Caldecote, Northill:
James Tingey Head Widr. 50 Market Gardener, Owning 50 acres. Born. B'wade.
& employing 8 labourers.
James Tingey Son. Unmd. 24 Gardener. Owns 12 acres, employs.1 labr. Born B'wade.
Sally Tingey Dau. Unmd 19 -------------------------------------------------- Born B'wade.

As Elizabeth Boniss died before 1851 we cannot discover her birthplace from the census returns. I see that family records gave it as Rotten. This must be an error for Potton, Beds.., which is near Biggleswade. I searched the census of Potton and Biggleswade and found a good number of Boniss, Boness and Bonuss families all originating from Potton, so I think that that must be the right place. When searches are continued I will go to Potton to extend the Boniss lineage. The name seems to have several mis?spellings and to derive from Bonehurst or Bolnhurst, locally pronounced Bonust and carelessly Bonus, this Boniss, Boness, etc.

The family group of Thomas Tingey and Mary Lee seems to be correct as you have it. I have not found the christening of the child Henry; I suppose that he is identified however from family records. I have however, found an additional child, Nathaniel, who was buried 07 March 1799, and we can assume was born about 1793. The son Thomas appears in the 1851 census at Rose Lane, Biggleswade, aged 57, with his wife Ann aged 50. The marriage of Thomas Tingey to Mary Lee at Northill, 22 October 1788 has been verified. She is always called Mary Lee. I do not know why you have her as Ann. The daughter Mary was buried 25 March 1811.

Now turning to the earlier generations on this line. You seem to have picked up the right christening in accepting Thomas Tingey, christened 01 April 17813 at Northill, son of William and Ann.

When William Tingey married Ann Sanders in 1766, he is described as a widower. We find the burial of his first wife, Elizabeth in 1764, and I give the relevant family group below:-.

William Tingey
chr. 08 Nov. 1724 Northill
son of Edward Tingey & Dorothy Brinkley.
Bur.17 Mar. 1797
md. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, Elizabeth ..................
md. 06 Jan. 1766 Northill Ann Sanders
Wife 1. Elizabeth .......................
born about 1731, Northill.
Children christened at Northill:
1. William. chr. 22 June 1753
2. Elizabeth chr. 03 Oct. 1755 bur. 30 May 1756
3. Dorothy (twin) chr. 03 Oct. 1755 bur. 25 Nov. 1755
4, Edward chr. 05 Nov. 1756 Md. 22 Oct. 1782 Sarah Orlibear
5. John chr. 29 Nov. 1758
6. Charles chr. 05 May 1760 Md. 07 Dec. 1789 Mrs. Hannah Brittain.

The children of the second marriage of William Tingey to Ann Sanders are correct as you have them. There were certainly more children after Elizabeth, born 1772 but as there was another couple named William & Ann Tingey in the parish it is not possible to determine which children belong to which couple. All the known children of William and Ann (Sanders) are described as of William “labourer”. However, in later life this same William became a farmer for the son Nathaniel christened in 1771, whom we know to belong to your William, is buried 16 September 1796 as son of William and Ann, “farmer”. This identifies for us the burial record of the parents William Tingey, farmer 17 March 1797 and Ann Tingey, widow, 04 September 1799. Some other children appear in the christening registers as children of William and Ann, farmer, and I think that it would be safe to add these children to the known family group of your William and Ann, as we know that he is the William who was a farmer. The children thus identified are:-

Henry chr. 01 Apr. 1781
David chr. 06 June 1782 buried 10 June 1783.

These are undoubtedly the youngest children of the couple in question. The other William and Ann can be identified in the burial registers as William Tingey, workhouse, buried, 17 September 1794, and Ann Tingey, widow, buried 20 January 1795. This is substantiated by the christening of their last child, Ann, 24 May 1795 aged 3, parents both dead. We can therefore attach to this couple that Ann born 1792 christened 20 January 1795, also Alwain christened 19 October 1786 and Giles Pain born 1784 and christened 19 October 1786, Peter christened 24 September 1782, Anna Maria born about 1781, christened 15 April 1782 (father William, junior), Dorothy christened 02 October 1778 (father Wm. Jnr.).

The children that remain in question are therefore:-

Jane chr. 10 Apr. 1774 Md. 11 Oct. 1797 John Standley.
Jemima chr. 27 Feb. 1775 bur. 13 May 1775
William chr. 01 Oct. 1775
Betsy chr. 03 Apr. 1777
Henry chr. 30 June 1777
Joseph chr. 02 Oct. 1778

I will try to get the will of William Tingey, farmer, who died in 1797 to see if it will clarify any of these children's parentage. It is easy to see why your William Tingey changes from a labourer to a farmer sometime between the birth of Elizabeth in 1772 and of Henry in 1781. The reason would be that his father, Edward Tingey, farmer, died in 1781, and his elder brother Edward Tingey, jnr., farmer, died in January 1782, so William took over the farm. Therefore some wills may be of help in sorting out this problem. Searches can continue on the Tingey and Brinkley lines, also Sanders.

REPORT 3. Part 1.

Wagstaff Line.

It is particularly satisfactory to report that we have been able to extend the Wagstaff ancestry. The christening entry of John Wagstaff, no. 9 on pedigree, supposedly born about 1761 has been found at Potton. He was christened there 12TH March 1760, son of Thomas & Susan Wagstaff. It seems safe to accept this as the needed entry. Therefore you can add the following newly found progenitors to the pedigree of Henry Wagstaff.

# 008 John Wagstaff add chr. date 12 Mar 1760, Potton

The Wagstaff lineage only goes back one generation at Potton. We then have to seek the christening of Thomas Wagstaff who married there in 1748. It still seems likely that there is some connection with the Newman Wagstaff who married at Northill in 1778, as John, son of this Thomas named a son Newman. However, as yet, we have not placed this other Newman. We found the christening of Thomas Wagstaff at Sutton and this enabled us to make further extensions to the Wagstaff pedigree. You will see that Thomas was, in fact, a son of the William and Frances Wagstaff who are mentioned as a possible connection in paragraph one of Report II. Therefore John Wagstaff’s (8 on pedigree) grandmother Frances, married as her second husband a Jonathan Rowney, showing that there was a long standing connection between the Wagstaff and Rowney families. This is further illustrated by the fact that John Wagstaff (no. 8) named a daughter Edith, and Edith was a name used in the Rowney and Cooper families. Later Joseph Wagstaff (son of John) married Edith Rowney. We do not yet know how exactly who the Jonathan Rowney was who married the widowed Frances Wagstaff, but he may be a good clue to the earlier connection of the Rowney pedigree.

Additions to the pedigree:

#32 William Wagstaff Chr. 24 Dec 1693
#33 Frances (Rugeley) md. 2ndly 1731 Jonathan Rowney
#64 William Wagstaff
#65 Dorothy Stevens md 29 Mar 1693 Sutton

The parents of the earliest known William Wagstaff, no. 64, may be the William Wagstaff who was buried at Sutton, 18TH May 1693 and the Frances Wagstaff, widow, who was buried at Sutton, 29TH Jan. 1709. This may be elucidated by further research.

Note: The second child was christened a few days after his mother’s marriage to Joseph Brin, so it is safe to assume that Joseph Brin was the father of this Joseph, and possibly of the first child, William.
It seems clear that when Frances Wagstaff, widow, married her second husband Jonathan Rowney, she settled with him at Potton, bringing with her the Wagstaff children by her first marriage. This explains why Thomas Wagstaff grew up and married at Potton, and clinches the connection between the Sutton and Potton Wagstaffs.

You may note that in my conjectural comments to paragraph one of Report 1, I assumed that the John Wagstaff who married Mary Abbess at Northill in 1734 must be the John christened in 1698, son of William and Dorothy. In making a thorough search I find that this was not a correct surmise because the John, son of William and Dorothy was buried as a child. My other hypothesis mentioned there, however, concerning the Rowney-Wagstaff connection proved to be the fact.

There was a William Wagstaff, son of William Wagstaff christened at Southill, 24th April 1670, and it seems that this must be your ancestor who married in 1693 at Sutton. Further investigation will be made to ascertain this connection.

The name of Thomas Wagstaff (no. 16)’s wife was [Susan] Foscue. This seems to be an abbreviation of the better known surname Fortescue. I find the same family in Potton registers recorded as Fortescue, Foscue, Fauscue, Foskew, Foskett, etc. In the 1600’s the spelling was usually Foscue, the incumbent of the 1720’s recorded the family invariably as Fortescue; a few years later we find Foscue again, and in the late 1700’s for some reason the corruption Foskett occurs. I have standardised the name as Foscue here, and I suggest that you do the same when submitting the sheets for clearance. Please put a note on the bottom of each sheet stating that variant spellings are Fortescue, Fauscue, Foskew, Foskett, etc. The unusual given name Jermyn used for generations in this family enables us to see clearly that indeed the same persons were recorded in various ways.

Richard Tilcock and Helen _______, were not married at Sandy. Searches can be made for their marriage in nearby parishes. There was a Roger Tilcock living at Sandy at the same time as your ancestor Richard Tilcock, probably a brother. This Roger married Alice Thacker in 1584 and had several children; Alice died and he then married Dorothy Powton in 1585 and had more children by her. Roger died at Sandy in 1610 and his widow in 1613/ If we find the earlier name of the Tilcocks we may be able to prove whether this Roger was Richard’s brother or not. Please correct the christening date of 7TH gt. grandfather William Tilcock, due to typist’s error this was given on page 4 of Report II, as June 1634. It should be June 1635.

REPORT 3: Part 2.

It is a pleasure to send a report on extensive searches in Bedfordshire on all your lines. Our searches have been most successful, and we have made considerable extensions to the pedigree, especially on the Wagstaff and Boness lines. We have completely cleared up the confusion on the Tingey line, which was explained in Report I, page 6. This was accomplished by a search of the Probate records at Bedford.

Tingey Line.

Please refer to page six of Report 1. We have found the will of William Tingey, no 24 on your pedigree. This completely clears up the problem of the children recorded in the parish registers as of William and Ann Tingey, but belonging to different families.

Your William Tingey made his will on 23 November 1791, calling himself William Tingey the elder, of Upper Caldecote, parish of Northill, farmer. The will was proved 31 March 1797; it mentions the testator’s wife Ann, and the following legacies: Son William, 1 guinea; son Edward £5.; son Charles £10.; son James, £10,; son Nathaniel, £20.; son Thomas £10.; son Samuel, £10.; son Joseph, £10.; son Henry £10.; daughter Elizabeth Harris £10.

The information in this will enables us to sort out the Tingey christenings without any doubt. The family group should read as follows:-

We also located and read the wills of no. 48, Edward Tingey, described as Edward Tingey the elder, of Upper Caldecot, yeoman. His will was dated 03 June 1779 and proved 25 October 1781. He mentions his son William, son Edward, daughter Elizabeth Ball, daughter Jane Saby and grandsons William, Edward, Charles and John, sons of his son William. This confirms the family group of Edward Tingey and Dorothy Brinkley as you have it, adding the married surnames of Elizabeth and Jane. It would seem that the daughter Mary was dead, as she is not mentioned in the will.

We also read the will of Edward Tingey, junior of Northill, farmer, dated 28 October 1781, proved 23 May 1782. In his will he mentions his father Edward, his uncle William Tingey, his wife Sarah, sons Edward and Charles, eldest daughter Elizabeth, younger daughters Ann, Mary and Fanny. All his children were under 21.

We also read the will of Edward Tingey of Northill, Farmer, dated 01 October 1782, proved 24 September 1791. He mentions his brother William, wife Elizabeth, daughter in law Sarah, widow of his son Edward deceased, and grandchildren Edward, Charles, Elizabeth, Ann, Mary, Frances, children of his son Edward, deceased. In an effort to find the parentage of Dorothy Brinkley we searched the Probate records and read the only wills of Brinkley testators of a suitable date. The will of Thomas Brinkley, fellmonger of Sandy, dated 08 March 1711, proved 20 December 1718, mentions his wife Elizabeth and his “eight heirs”. It does not specify who the heirs were; we do not know if they were his children or not. The other will was of his widow, Elizabeth Brinkley of Sandy, dated 18 December 1718, proved 20 December 1718; she mentions her daughter-in-law, Ann Butterfield, widow, and names her nephew Daniel Squire of Chipping Barnet, Herts., as executor. Sandy Registers show that this Thomas Brinkley married twice, for his first wife, Frances ………, was buried there 30 January 1707,and then he married Elizabeth Day on 24 October 1710. None of his children appear at Sandy, so we will search other parishes.

Tilcock Line.

We have read the will of William Tilcock, 7th gt-grandfather of RMW. It is dated 08 December 1711, proved 09 May 1712. In it he mentions his son William and several of his grandchildren, confirming the family groups as given in Report II.. We also read the will of William Tilcock, 5th gt.grandfather of RMW, dated 02 April 1751 and proved 04 July 1752. He was a gardener, and in his will mentioned his son William and daughters Ann Cooper, Elizabeth Tilcock and Edith Tilcock. This confirms the family group as shown on page 3 of Report II. You will notice that of William Tilcock’s 11 children, seven had died before he made his will in 1761, and he mentions all four that were living.

Spring Line.

We have read the will of all Spring testators of Sandy prior to 1700. In an effort to compile an accurate pedigree of this family. Unfortunately, even with the additional information from the wills it is not possible to make an accurate pedigree with sure connections prior to John Spring already found, for example, at one time there were two or even three contemporary John Springs living at Sandy, each married to a woman named Agnes. The only hope left to sort out this branch of the pedigree lies in finding the wills of some of the related families, and we will try to do this. For example, one John Spring married an Agnes Ratford and wills of the Ratford family might throw further light on the problem. Other families connected to the Springs were Farr, Bromsall, Childe, Bishop, Neville, Swetman, Carter, Thickpenny, Michborne, Buttris, etc. Wills of testators of these names from Sandy will be read. If this fails to make the various families clear, we will have to send them for clearance on a relative basis.

REPORT 4. Part 1.

This is just a short report to notify you of some additions to the pedigree and family record. I have ordered a search of Northill to complete the family group of Joseph and Edith Wagstaff and the results of this will follow when I receive them.

Regarding the family group of Thomas Sanders which you queried, the correct christening date of Anne is 1st March 1746/7. Up to that time the year began at the end of March (25th) instead of on 1st January and therefore 1st March 1746 was really 1st March 1747, the way we now calculate. The calendar changed in 1752. I think this covers the query.

Unfortunately it is not possible to get the christening date of Edward Bonest. The registers are defective during the Commonwealth period and there are no entries (or Bishops Transcripts) for 1660 – 1664 inclusive. I have no doubt that this ancestry is correct however. There are no other Bonest families at all; the name is very rare. Your Edward named his eldest son Oliver. Cockayne Hatley adjoins Potton.

I am afraid that when I made up the family group of Edward Bonast and Elizabeth Ainsworth, I missed out one of their children. Please add her to the family group. She will be child no. 2, Elizabeth, christened 30TH March 1693, Potton. (See Report III, page 2, last family.) She married 05TH October 1714, Richard Barr

Reed, I thought I had sent it already. But here it is.

Carol, Did you get this one before?

WCP
I think that the Warren Bonast who follows must have been a brother of the ancestor Edward Bonast. You will notice that Edward named a son Warren, which is not at all a usual christian name. Warren may have [been] christened also at Cockayne Hatley during the defective period in the registers, about 1661. Personally, I would be inclined to add him to the family group of Oliver Bonest and Mary (page 1) but I leave it to you.

Add also to the family group of Edward Tingey and Dorothy Brinkley, the burial date of the child, John christened 1730; he was buried 03rd November 1730.

The surname Tingey is found scattered throughout the parishes on this area. A search of wills will be made on this line.

Having now covered a wide area around, I came to the conclusion that your earliest known ancestor on the Wagstaff line, William Wagstaff who married Dorothy Stevens at Sutton, 29th March 1693 is the one christened 24th April 1670 at Southill, son of William Wagstaff. This older William was buried at Sutton, 18th May 1693, just after his son’s marriage there. I have not yet found the marriage of this William, nor any other children, but I think we should wait before submitting his family group therefore, although you can add him to the pedigree of Henry Wagstaff :- (no. 64) William Wagstaff, buried 18th May 1693.

Refer to Report III (page __), family group for them (5th gt. grandnephew).

Research is continuing.

REPORT 5.

I received this patron’s letter (un-dated). I appreciate the comments of members of her family about the question of interest on the money left for research. I would like to point out that I do not have interest on this money either as it is not in a deposit account. I appreciate that the family would like this money to be earning interest. I am finishing up all work under the present system before 30TH August 1966 and reporting the results. After that date I do not intend to take on any English research under the present system as I have had too many cases to cope with and the pressure is too heavy.

I will be accepting only a few patrons, preferably organised family organisations or enthusiastic individuals. I will not accept more than 20 in all, and perhaps only about a dozen. These patrons will be expected to put about 400 dollars each year for their research project and they will receive a yearly report and have three weeks to a month devoted each year entirely to their work. If the Wagstaff family would like to be one of the patrons under the new system. I will be pleased to consider them, and they could put their names on a waiting list with me or with Sister Preece. Under the new system I am sure that we can arrange for the family to keep their funds in an interest-earning deposit until the time that they are actually needed for research if they prefer that; this is always providing that I will be able to accept them.

I have found additional children in the family of Joseph and Edith Wagstaff and it seems most important that these children should be added to the records. These are:-

1. Hannah chr. 25 July 1819 Northill. Born at Hatch.
2. John chr. 07 Apr 1822 Northill Born at Upper Caldecote.
3. William chr. 05 June 1825 Northill Born at Upper Caldecote.
4. Isaac chr. 11 Dec 1830 Northill
Born at Upper Caldecote.

I have also been in to the problem of the George Larkins family. I am returning the two family group sheets. I suggest that Sister Petersen should go and see Brother Christiansen personally about this and put the following report to him.

Re: Family group of George Larkins and Elizabeth Daniel.
The Bedfordshire Probate records have been examined for a will or administration of George Larkins, 1800, or Elizabeth Larkins, 1799. Unfortunately these persons appear to have died intestate and without estate. The following parish registers have been examined:- christenings, marriages and burials, 1740 – 1800:

Biggleswade, Old Warden, Sutton, Potton, Wilshamstead, Northill, Eyeworth, Dunton, Edworth, Cockayne Hatley, Stotfold, Henlow, Haynes, Clifton, Wrestlingworth, Langford, Shefford, Southill, Cople, Great Barford, Blunham, Sandy, Everton, Tempsford, Cardington

In all these parishes which cover completely the area around Northill, there is ONLY ONE George Larkins who appears, and he appears in the registers of Biggleswade and Northill, which are adjoining parishes. It is known that his grandchildren lived at Upper Caldecote, a hamlet half-way between the two churches.

Subsequent to the marriage of George Larkins to Elizabeth Daniel at Biggleswade, in 1754 there are christenings of 10 children at Biggleswade and 2 at Northill. Two other infant children were buried at Biggleswade. All these children are recorded to George and Elizabeth Larkins. I have also checked the Bishops Transcripts of Biggleswade, which support the Parish Registers and especially in the case of the multiple birth in 1757. The re-occurrence of multiple births in this family (one set of triplets and two sets of twins) rather indicate also that all these were of one family. There are perfectly reasonable gaps between the dates of all the children.

For these reasons I think, the additional children should be added to the [family group] sheet submitted in 1947 by Mrs Kurr and the necessary alterations made.

Research is in progress on all lines in Probate records.

REPORT 6.

9th February 1966.

It is a pleasure to send an extensive report on research on the pedigree of Ray M. Wagstaff. I assume that he family have safely received the short report sent in December with the dates of the additional children in the family group of Joseph and Edith Wagstaff.

We have been able to find the maiden name of no. 33, on [the] pedigree, Frances, wife of William Wagstaff of Sutton, who married 2ndly, Jonathan Rowney of Potton. She was Frances Rugeley of Potton. Extensive searches in many primary sources have been made and an excellent pedigree compiled on re. lineages from
Parish Registers, Wills and administrations, Chancery Proceedings etc. The sources used are shown at the foot of each family group. I am sure that the family will be very pleased with this splendid record as the searches, although at one point very complicated, have been in the end most successful and enabled us to trace the ancestry back for several generations, and out of Bedfordshire into Warwickshire.

Note: The Visitations of Warwickshire for 1619 has been seen. This Visitation shows the wife of the above Nicholas to be Joan Massey. The Will of Nicholas appoints a John Massey, executor but mentions only a wife Cecily. In the absence of other evidence I have therefore shown his wife to be Cecily. She may have been Cecily Massey and the name Jane only may be erroneous. On the other hand Joan Massey may have been another wife. The 1683 Visitation is also in error, it calls Nicholas “William”. It is most probable, and all evidence available points to it, that the above Nicholas Rugeley was son or grandson of another Nicholas Rugeley who lived at Dunton [Hall], in 1455; and that this Nicholas of 1455 was a son of another Nicholas Rugeley who was living at Dunton Hall in 1423, married to Edith [Waldiffe], whose will, dated 13 Jan 1437, was proved 07 Nov 1438, PCC. If we assume that the father of Nicholas Rugeley, born about 1487, was Mr. Rugeley born about 1455, then his father would be Nicholas Rugeley living at Dunton Hall in 1455 and born about 1423, son of Nicholas Rugeley born about 1391, living at Dunton 1423 and Edith his wife. As both the 1619 and 1682 [Heralds] visitations feature a William Rugeley in the ancestry; the 1682
erroneously as the father of John born 1513. I am inclined to accept the earlier visitation, and I believe that back of Nicholas born about 1487 the pedigree runs William born about 1455; Nicholas born about 1423, Nicholas born about 1391 and Edith. The first Nicholas, born about 1391, is said to have come from Hawksyard, Staffordshire.

This concludes my present findings. I will not be accepting any further requests for English research until after 31st August 1966. If the Wagstaff family are interested in having me continue with their research after this date they could get further information from Mrs. Preece and put their name down on a waiting list. The cost of the present searches is $468. Four hundred and sixty-eight dollars.

3 Mar 1966

Since making the last report some important information has come in on the direct ancestry. I have obtained the act of administration of the estate of Henry Rugeley, of Coleshill. This was not found previously because it was erroneously listed as Ridgley. The date of the admon. Is 15 Dec 1628 in [the]Prerogative Court of Canterbury, and this date and the additional sources can be added to the family group sheet. This admon. Reveals that the maiden name of the ancestress, Sarah, wife of Henry Rugeley was STEPPINGS: she had married 1stly, William Preston, as you will see. This admon. Lists all the children of Henry and Sarah living in 1628, as Henry, Rowland, George, John and Thomas. We already knew of four of these and you can add the other. I think this Henry must have died young as we find no more about him.

You can also add the date of the admon. Of Rowland Rugeley, likewise listed as Ridgley, on 7 Oct 1629. This lists his surviving children as Lettice, Odillia, Catherine, Isabel, George, Penelope, Devereux, John and Mary. I do not have the last report by me now, but it seems that this adds several children to the family group of Rowland Rugeley and Lettice Knowles. I see that the son William is not mentioned and I wonder if he is the same as Devereux? Perhaps called William Devereux Rugeley? I also notice that Dorothy is not included in the children show in the admon., and we may need to do some more research on the family group to be sure it is correct and complete.

There is an amount of 10 dollars owing for obtaining the records of these two administrations.

Report 7

15 May 1966

I am reporting on the family group record of William Wagstaff and Betsy Tingey, information especially requested by the patron.

Enclosed you will find a long birth certificate of Sarah Elizabeth Wagstaff, born 4 Jun 1850 NOT 20 May 1850 as you had. Also note that she was born at Beeston, Sandy, Beds., NOT at Biggleswade.

Also enclosed is a short birth certificate of the 2ND child, Mary Ann, born 27 Apr 1853.

Also enclosed is a short birth certificate of the 3RD child, Alice, born 19 Sep 1855.

Also enclosed is a short birth certificate of the 4TH child, James, born 12 Jan 1857;

Also enclosed is a long birth certificate of the 5TH child, Arthur, born 2 Feb 1860, at Lower Caldecote, Northill.

A search was made for the birth of Henry Wagstaff from the September quarter 1860, to the September quarter 1863 inclusive. There were four Henry Wagstaff births in this period in England; one in Liverpool, one at Nottingham; one in East London and one in Tewkesbury. All four entries were checked but none was a son of William and Betsy. I can only conclude that Henry’s birth was not registered, or that he had some name other than Henry at the time of his birth. As you will see below, Henry was not born before 1861 as he is not included with the family in the 1861 Census, and from the dates of the other children it would seem that 17 Jan 1862 is likely to be his correct birth date.

Enclosed is a long birth certificate of the 7th child, Edith Wagstaff, born at New Bradwell, Bucks., on 19 Feb 1864. The family would appear to have moved to Bradwell from Upper Caldecote, Northill, about 1863.

Also enclosed is a birth certificate of the 8th child, Ernest George born at New Bradwell, Bucks, 29th December 1866

Also enclosed is a birth certificate of the 9th child, Girthie Amy, (rather than Gertrude Amy born at New Bradwell, Bucks 30 Jan 1869,

I searched from 1870 – 1874 inclusive for the births of a Walter and George Wagstaff. There was no Walter in this period, and the one George in the Biggleswade district, on checking, proved NOT to be a child of William and Betsy. I searched the deaths from 1870-1880. There were about 20 infant Walters and Georges in this period, but as none were in either Newport Pagnell or Biggleswade Registration Districts, and as I have not found the births, I did not have all the references checked. Do you have good evidence for the existence of Walter and George? Can you glean any more information at your end to help locate them here, I think if they existed, the dates must be incorrect.

I searched the 1861 Census of Northill and found the William Wagstaff family, which documents them further:-

William Wagstaff Head md 34 Gardener born Northill
Betsey Wagstaff Wife md 33 born Northill
Mary A. Wagstaff Dau unm 08 born Northill
Alice Wagstaff Dau unm 07 born Northill
James Wagstaff Son unm 04 born Northill
Arthur Wagstaff Son unm 01 born Northill

As you will see this corresponds with the family group. Sarah Elizabeth had died in 1858 and therefore does not appear in the family as above.

Further, in accordance with your request, I worked on the family group of James Tingey. I obtained the death certificate of your ancestress Elizabeth Boniss, his first wife. You will recollect that Elizabeth was alive in the 1841 Census and that James appeared as a widower in 1851. From the enclosed certificate you will see that Elizabeth died 15 Jan 1850, aged 52 [years old]. I found this certificate by searching the deaths onwards from 1841 until the entry was found. These data should be added to your record.

I then found your ancestor James Tingey in the 1861 Census. By this time he was remarried, and appears as follows:-

James Tingey Head md. 61 Gardener Born Biggleswade, Beds.
Elizabeth Tingey Wife md 53 Born Godmanchester, Hunts.

I searched for the marriage of James Tingey to his second wife Elizabeth, starting in 1851. There was a James Tingey, widower in 1854 (erroneously shown as Tringey instead of Tingey on the certificate) and I thought that this must be the one. I enclose the certificate but you will see that it pertains to a different James. I will have another search made from 1854 onwards to 1861 to find the marriage of James to Elizabeth. You will see from the enclosed will that she was a widow Ibbs when she married James. Her maiden name may have been Law or Yearsley as you indicate this will be shown on the marriage certificate.

I searched for and found the will of your ancestor James Tingey which is of interest. It is quite a long will; a photostatic copy is enclosed. I think that you will be able to read it without trouble but for your convenience, the genealogical data therein is as follows:-

Will of James Tingey of Lower Caldecot, Northill, Gardener. Dated 15 Nov 1871; probate 06 Jul 1872.

‘this settlement made on my marriage with my present wife, Elizabeth, formerly Elizabeth Ibbs, widow.
Executors: son, James Tingey, of Northill and
Henry Dillamore, Farmer, the younger.
“my three following children . . . .son James Tingey; daughter Elizabeth, the wife of William Wagstaff (& her children), daughter Sally the wife of Joseph Lilley (and her children)”
“my grandson and grand-daughter, Thomas Tingey and Sarah Ann Tingey, being son and daughter of my son Henry Tingey who are now residing at Salt Lake in the State of Utah in North America.”
Witnesses:
Thomas Chapman, Solicitor, Biggleswade
Edmond Stanton, clerk to Mr. Chapman.

In order to complete the family group of James Tingey, in addition to getting the marriage certificate of James to his second wife Elizabeth Ibbs, widow, we ought to search for the marriage certificate of Sarah Tingey and Joseph Lilley from 1851 on.

Your ancestor Joseph Wagstaff also appeared in the 1861 Census of Northill as follows (living with his son):

Joseph Wagstaff Head Widr. 68 Agr. labr born Northill
John Wagstaff Son Md. 39 Agr. labr born Northill
Eliza Wagstaff Dau.in law 39 born Sharnbrook
Maximillian Wagstaff Grandson 13 born Northill
William Wagstaff Grandson 12 born Northill
Ellen Wagstaff Grand-dau. 09 born Northill
Fanny Wagstaff Grand-dau. 08 born Northill

The cost of obtaining the enclosed information was $40. Kindly send this in to Mrs. Preece at your earliest convenience. I will send on the two marriage certificates mentioned above as soon as possible.

REPORT 8.

Re: Wagstaff Family Research.

Copies of this letter/report have been mailed independently to Mrs. Virginia W. Bushman, 2318 Emerson Avenue, Salt Lake City, and to Arthur J. Wagstaff, Jnr., 1894 East 4625 South, Salt Lake City, Utah.

I have made some investigations into the matter of the pedigree differences occurring in the Wagstaff-Larkins line between the pedigree as the Wagstaff Family Organisation now have it and the pedigree prepared by Mrs. Ellen Kerr of Salt Lake City for Illa Egren, Evangeline Wagstaff Sachs and others.

I decided that it would be wise to verify each link from the beginning.
Northill Parish Registers show the christenings of 6 children of John and Elizabeth Wagstaff:

James christened 27 March 1785 Edith christened 19 August 1786 Isaac christened 09 December 1787 Jenny christened 29 March 1789 Newman christened 18 December 1791 William christened 18 December 1791 (twin)

The Registers of Blunham Baptist Chapel show the christenings of four more children, and here they are shown as children of John and Elizabeth Wagstaff, of Brookend, Northill; mother’s maiden surname Larkins. These children were:
John born 06 Feb 1793 registered 05 Nov. 1793
Joseph born 23 Apr 1797 registered 12 Sep 1797
Ann born 04 Aug 1798 registered 29 Jan 1799
Ruth born 07 Feb. 1800 registered 19 Mar 1800

In addition we know that there was another son, Thomas. He is mentioned in family records. He married 12TH October 1814, Rebecca Garner, and he appears in the 1851 Census of Northill, aged 54 years. He would, therefore, have been born about 1796 at Northill. This means that he comes between John and Joseph, was born after the parents were converted to the Baptist sect, and we must conclude that his birth was not registered through carelessness.

In Northill Parish Registers we find the burial of Elizabeth, wife of John Wagstaff, labourer, 25TH March 1805. Four years later we find the marriage of John Wagstaff, widower, to Mary Huckle, widow, at Northill, on 24TH December 1809. No children are recorded to this marriage and I think that there were none. The burial of John Wagstaff is shown in Northill registers, 12TH July 1835,aged 75 years. He was therefore born about 1760.

The marriage of John Wagstaff to Elizabeth Larkins does not appear at Northill, but a few miles away in the parish of Eyeworth, the year prior to the christening of John and Elizabeth’s first child at Northill. We find the marriage of John Wagstaff to Elizabeth Inskip, widow, 16TH June 1784. Further examination of Eyeworth parish register shows that John Inskip married Elizabeth Larkins, 11TH October 1776. Subsequently four children were christened to them at Eyeworth, in 1777, 1779, and 1782. It is clear that the ancestress, Elizabeth Larkins, married firstly, John Inskip and secondly John Wagstaff.

We then come to establishing the christening and parentage of this Elizabeth Larkins who married firstly in 1776 and who had children from 1777 – 1800. Mrs. Kurr decided somewhat arbitrarily that she was the Elizabeth Larkins christened 24TH March 1750 at Northill, daughter of Francis Larkins (or Larkinson) and Jane. I disagree with this. This Elizabeth would have been 50 when the last child was born, which whilst possible is unusual.

There was another Elizabeth Larkins christened at Biggleswade, which is a parish between Northill and Eyeworth. This Elizabeth was christened 25TH September 1757, daughter of George and Elizabeth Larkins. She would have been aged 19 at the time of her first marriage and 43 when she had her last child which is far more reasonable. There is another pointer however, indicating that this Elizabeth is the one who married John Inskip and John Wagstaff.

The Elizabeth Larkins who married John Inskip and John Wagstaff had one set of twins by her first husband, George and Sally christened at Eyeworth, 20TH July 1782, and another set of twins by her second husband, William and Newman christened at Northill, 18TH December 1791. It is a fact that twin bearing is hereditary. The Elizabeth Larkins who was christened at Biggleswade in 1757 and was herself a twin; her parents also had a set of triplets and two sets of twins.

Also notice that Elizabeth Larkins named her eldest son George (this would be after her father, George Larkins) but that she did not have a Francis among her fifteen children.

For these reasons I conclude that Elizabeth Larkins, daughter of George, christened at Biggleswade, in 1757 is the one who married in the adjoining parish John Inskip and secondly, John Wagstaff.

Next we need to ascertain the christening of John Wagstaff who married the widow Elizabeth Larkins Inskip in 1784. We know he was buried in July 1835 aged 75 years, so he would have been born about 1760. He would therefore have been three years younger than his wife.

I found a christening of a John Wagstaff at Potton on 12TH March 1760, son of Thomas and Susan. Potton is very close to Eyeworth where John Wagstaff married. This Thomas Wagstaff, left a will, proved 21ST April 1789 and in it the son John Wagstaff is mentioned. A complete search of Potton [parish registers] produced no conflicting evidence. That is to say the John christened there in 1760, suitably disappears from Potton before 1784. As this John was christened in the right year, 1760, I therefore accepted him as the John who married Elizabeth Larkins and also for another reason.

The grandmother of this John Wagstaff, christened at Potton in 1760, was Mrs. Frances Wagstaff, and after her husband’s death she married secondly a Jonathan Rowney and had children by him. In as much as John Wagstaff’s son Joseph also married a Rowney, I felt that this was an indication of a link between these two families, as John 1760’s father, Thomas would have been raised by his mother and step-father Jonathan and Frances Rowney, and John Wagstaff had Rowney uncles and aunts.

Mrs. Kurr picked up another John Wagstaff christened at Great Barford, son of Newman and Rebecca. She decided that this must be the John who married at Eyeworth in 1776. Great Barford is near to Northill. The John Wagstaff who married Elizabeth Larkins named one of his sons Newman, and this would indicate a link between the two families. However, the birth date of this John, 1756, is four years off the birth date (1760) calculated from his age at death.

Newman was apparently a favoured name in the Wagstaff family for we have another Newman Wagstaff who married at Northill, 15TH January 1778 to Mary Green, and this Newman’s christening has never been found.

I think that we will find eventually that the Newman Wagstaff of Great Barford, who married Rebecca Watkins in 1746, and the Newman Wagstaff who married at Northill in 1778 are somehow connected to the lineage of John Wagstaff christened 1760, son of Thomas Wagstaff christened 1723.

I will make further searches in the parishes around Great Barford. In the meantime I can see no reason not to accept the ancestral lines as we have them, and give below what I consider to be the correct family group record of John and Elizabeth Wagstaff:

As Inskip will now be a sealing line I will make searches to complete the record and ancestry of John Inskip. I would mention in passing that William Gillions and Bathsheba Lee were married 15TH May 1786, at Sandy, Bedfordshire. It is clear that Bathsheba Lee, the mother of Isaac Wagstaff’s wife and Mary Lee, the grandmother of Elizabeth Tingey who married William Wagstaff were sisters so that the Isaac Wagstaff descendants and the Joseph Wagstaff descendants not only have the Wagstaff/Larkins ancestry in common, but also the Lee ancestry, so this is all the more reason for the two branches to work together.

Necessary Explanation:
Acceptance of the christening of John Wagstaff, 1760, is based on his age at burial and no other candidate at this date in a very large area searched. This John christened 1760 at Potton is mentioned in his father’s will but did not remain at Potton. There was only one other candidate John Wagstaff, buried at Great Barford 1756, but as the age was 4 years out according to the burial this was NOT accepted. [The] maiden surname of [the mother, LARKINS, is shown in Blunham Baptist Chapel Registers thus proving that she is the same woman who married firstly, John Inskip. FOOTNOTES.2

Elizabeth Wagstaff, 12 Jan 1798; 14 July 1799 . . .”& Elizabeth Wagstaff was baptised (having previously related the dealings of God with their souls to the satisfaction of the Church) and received into full communion at the Lord’s Table.” There is also recorded the names of John Wagstaff & Mary Wagstaff under the date, March 1812, as being baptised by S. Hawkins and received into the church. Both made their mark. Page 5: Since this report was received the original parish registers of Biggleswade have been consulted. No record of a christening for Elizabeth Larkins is evident prior to, during and after 1757. See footnote of same reference on page 3. Born 6 Feb 1799, Northill NOTE. With regards to the suggestions put forward by Brian Leese (above) and Dean J. Hunter (see Appendix) on the identification of the correct John Wagstaff, a copy of the Will of Thomas Wagstaff is also appended owing to the fact that there is NO mention of John Wagstaff in his father’s will.

REPORT No. 9:

WAGSTAFF FAMILY,
August 1968

I am pleased to make a report on the progress achieved this year on the ancestral lines of this family. In accordance with the agreement reached when I met with the descendants of the family, this year I have made searches on the ancestry of Mary Bathsheba Gillions, wife of Isaac Wagstaff as some of her descendants are included in the family organisation, and previously these people would have contributed to research which included the ancestry of Edith Rowney (wife of Joseph Wagstaff), and of Elizabeth Tingey (wife of William Wagstaff) which is not their blood line. However, both families also share the same Lee line as Elizabeth Tingey’s grandmother Mary Lee (wife of Thomas Tingey), ____ ___ Mary Bathsheba’s grandmother Bathsheba Lee, were from the same family. Therefore it is both impractical to separate the research at all.

Firstly, I dealt extensively with the query on the Wagstaff line. This was brought about because of research done by Ellen Kurr of Salt Lake City, some years ago for descendants of Isaac Wagstaff. Mrs. Kurr’s findings, which got into the archives, did not agree with ours, and it was essential to clear the matter up once and for all. I discussed this matter also with Arthur J. Wagstaff, jnr., and his cousins, Mrs. Virginia Bushman and Mrs. Sachs when I was in Salt Lake City last year and I would like the findings to be publicised to family and a definitive and correct record be placed in the archives.

It is certainly true that it is harder to correct a muddle and put things right than it is to start from scratch. My findings and conclusions on this matter were embodied in a three-page report sent to you last winter, which I trust has met with your approval. It was necessary to use a portion of the research funds to go into this matter, and I felt it necessary and in fact unavoidable.

When we went over the records together last year we came to the conclusion that some of the more recent family group sheets were not complete, and so I worked on the later period up to 1837 to complete these. Thus I completed the family group of Joseph Wagstaff and Edith Rowney with full dates for the three known
children and one additional child, Isaac, hitherto unknown.

Note: You will see that we eventually discovered the christening of Thomas Wagstaff, 8th child of John & Elizabeth Wagstaff, born after his parents were converted to the Baptist sect. He was christened when 23; after his marriage and apparent re-conversion to the Church of England.I also found that Joseph Wagstaff, 9th child of John & Elizabeth Wagstaff, who was raised a Baptist, was christened 21st July 1816 aged 220 [?] and we have found an additional child in this family who had not been recorded in the Baptist chapel. This is Hester. Hester was born about 1798 and we can come to no other conclusion than that she is the child registered in the Baptist Chapel as Ann. The family group of John Wagstaff & Elizabeth Larkins should therefore read:

Note: On the family group of William Gillions & Bathsheba Lee: The christening of William Gillions about 1761 is not recorded at Northill, either he was christened there and the entry omitted from the register by carelessness, or he was christened in another parish, not yet searched – perhaps his mother’s native parish. The Poor Law Rate Book of Northill, shows that Jane Gillions, widow, was receiving alms in 1796 and 1798, and that she resided with her son William Gillions at Upper Caldecote.
